Wood Carving Tools

Wood Carving Tools

Handles

Carving tool handles are usually hardwood, in a range of sizes to suit large or small hands and the size of the work involved.

Honing

Wood carving tools should also be honed along the line of their shape, but unlike firmer or bevel edge chisels, wood carving and sculpturing tools should, as a general rule, have rolled bevels on both sides. These can be maintained by moving the tool in a figure of eight across the stone, carefully rolling it, while keeping the bevel in constant touch with the stone.

Wood Carving Tools

These are made in a large number of shapes and sizes, many originally user formed, covering straight, curved, 'V' shaped, spoon bit and spoon bent, with straight, round or skew ends (skew is slanted at an angle of 27°). They are illustrated in the catalogue and most sets contain leaflets with user instructions for each type.

Carvers' Screw

This is for anchoring the carving and is screwed into the base of the work through a hole in the bench.
